A super Sunday

Sundays are usually just plain fun...today was extra nice. I got the thought Will might be ready for the Construx his Daddy and the gang played with "a few years ago" and I was so right. I think Dad and Toby had just as much fun.

We all shared church time, brunch, skyped the birthday girl [Annie] and goofed off the rest of the day. Simple but perfect.

Oh yeah, they are back!!!!

Living away from my kids and grandkids is not fun. I miss the day to day happy moments of kids surprising me at my door, calling me up to come over, bringing over a special picture they drew, seeing the latest trio creation, having weekends together, watching them dance to Elmo or a Disney movie or "rocka" rocking on our wooden horse and being their silly, huggable selves.

I find myself wanting to make sure I "read it again" one more time in a new way. saying "yes" enthusiastically to Annie sleepovers in my room [and thinking the lack of sleep is so worth hearing her wiggle in bed], drinking another cup of Millie's "tea" with joy. I snuggled with Owen and tried to memorize his little face, the softness and warmth of his touch. I will see a much changed Owen when I see him next [those little babies just change so quickly on me].

When I was with Mira I happily fed, changed, laughed, bathed and played with her every chance I could and it was the same here. I want to touch and enjoy every second because I know it will be a while before I am able to see their smiles and feel their warm selves in my arms.

I am wonderfully spoiled in Ohio but here and in Orlando I happily snatch as many moments as the kiddos will let me. Grandkiddos are the sweetest gift.

This week is moving along way too fast but happily with lots of Mira time. It has been full of happy hours of play, yummy meals, and lots of time together [thanks Justin for taking Tuesday off]. It is so good to have a chance to relax with Mary, Justin and Mira. It has been a long time since we have had one on one Mira time and she is so sweet, easy going and always ready for any adventure. I can't believe it is coming true but the news that Heather, Jeremy, Annie, Millie and soon to be born [Owen] are being stationed At Wright Patterson is a miracle. I am flying high. To think 9 of our kids will be right here in Ohio is a dream come true.

Annie, Millie and Owen will be able to share the seasons, play in the snow, see family and be here to hug and kiss all year long. No more "missing you" feelings after skyping. As they get older we can "kidnap" them for a stay with Bapa and Gramma. No sad goodbyes when we leave on a airplane. Just knowing they will all be in Ohio will be absolutely wonderful.

Today is the last day of the holidays for us. All the decorations will come down and all the happy memories treasured and recalled throughout the year. Another year over but a new one full of anticipation. This year we will be thrilled to welcome another grandson [our Owen], Evan will graduate from St. Ed's [it's hard to believe our 8th son will be an alumni], the 5 grandkiddos of 2010 all will turn 2 [already?] and Will will begin kindergarten. Those are the things we know but their will be so many more moments, days and events that will fill our hearts with JOY.

For years I had a Christmas party so Mom and Bt could see everyone in one place. It has been our tradition and we only missed a few years. It was tough thinking about all of us getting together without Mom but when we visited her on Christmas at WillowWood I knew she would be happy many of us would be getting together. People make the party and we were able to share time with family we love.

From Mass together, to our McDonald's invasion, to time shared, it is always the little memories that we cherish most. Cousin helping cousin with presents, the fun put into present exchange gifts, the giggles and laughing and TIME together made Christmas Eve and Christmas Day perfect.

Though we certainly missed Jeremy, Heather, Annie, and Millie we skyped and talked a number of times throughout the day. Hearing Millie say "Merry Christmas" and Annie showing us everything in her stocking was fun. We shared Christmas.

These last couple of weeks have been busy. The Polar Express with T,V,W,I and Gabi was a treat. Seeing Christmas through their eyes is the best. Christmas was meant for kids and I get to share their excitement when I am with them.

Chloe helped spread cheer this week. First we visited Momma and, as she always does, Chloe made so many residents smile. I had her sit in Mom's lap in the wheelchair for a ride and Mom said nothing but along the ride Chloe's head touch Mom's face and Mom kissed it [melted my heart].

Then for Kateri's last day of school we visited the kids. Little C didn't disappoint and readily joined the big kids. Gotta love it.

22 A NEW pathway to Schwartz Park

Schwartz Park has been a a fun place for us to watch the grandkids play soccer and play in the playground and for summer basketball nights when the guys didn't use Mills Creek hoops. These past few Sundays Bill and I made it even more special.

Since the Schwartz Park woods is directly behind our new home we had decided, the moment we bought the place, to make a trail from our home to the walking trails that would lead us to the park. Project begun. We starting blazing a trail a couple of weeks back on a Sunday afternoon and got lot done and went back in again this past Sunday. Our next job is to mark it a bit more with sticks. We can now officially travel from our backyard to the soccer fields no problem, and easily to the walking and bike path in the woods the city has made....awesome!!!

Boy, our kids would have LOVED these woods and Evan has said he is going to help us make the woods ours, too. Now the grandkids will have wandering paths to fun. What a great thing.

19 I am thankful for the husband and wives my oldest 5 kids have chosen to walk beside them. "Mother-in -law"....the word has bad connotations and it the source of too many jokes. But my daughters-in-law and favorite son-in-law have made my job easy. I make mistakes, will certainly never take the place of any of their Mom's, but each one has let me find my place in their individual family. Each are good to me in ways too many to mention.

I try and remember the example my mother-in-law set for me.

18th already THANKFUL FRIDAY

18 I am thankful for Friday evenings. Is anything better? I know the weekend is before me and can enjoy the knowledge that Dad and I are off together.

When the kids were little payday Friday was especially a treat because we splurged on a treat for supper, maybe pizza. Sometimes we just had a night at the park or played in the playroom. Even better we visited Grandma and Grandpa. As the older kids grew few sports teams had games or practice on Fridays [I know all the teams Dad coached NEVER scheduled anything for Friday]. Tobin and Kateri even skipped gymnastics most Fridays. Yep, Fridays were great.

As the kids grew Fridays sure changed and were full of activities but it was FRIDAY and Monday was still so far off.

Now I like them for many of the same reasons but also because I know on FRIDAY that the weekend is here and that is when we are sure to catch up with the family. Will and Isa have games to be proud about. Evan keeps us running. Katie, Damian and Grayson make for a super enjoyable visit. Kateri and Paul and/or Tobin and Veronika are sure to join us for a meal, a visit or a movie. Jen and Jona pop in and out. And we are sure to hear from more of the other kids. [Eddie and Tim this is your cue to come home more].

17th thankful rememberence

17 Still miss him, always will, but I know he will never leave us. He was the holiest man I have ever known but also the most down to earth, kind and gentle man. He had a great sense of humor and could give you the most genuine hug. You were everything when you were with him. He loved each of us. I cherish his letters as far back as Ghana and the emails up until he left us. There was one phenomenal man. He never preached but you could feel God by being in his presence.

Not everyone has an Uncle Charley in their life...so this is a gigantic thank you.

15 Silly I know, but I am thankful for sweet treats. Chocolate can make me smile, can lift my spirits and is just plain great.

When the kids were little, I did a silly thing. I began making up stories about "what Dad had as a sweet treat after they had gone to bed". I'd elaborate on a fantastical dessert stuffed with every sweet thing they could ever imagine. I'd explain he had scoops of ice cream, fudge, lots of Redi-Whip then go on and on [and I do mean I could imagine a HUGE dessert]. This was kind of our thing. "What did Dd have last night?", from them. "OH, you wouldn't believe..." and on and on I'd go. It was great fun but secretly I think they all knew it was mommy who craved these imaginary sweet treats.

14 I've written about my Dad before but not the gift Mom is to me. My mom is the strongest person I know. Widowed at 36 expecting her 10th child, I can't even imagine. She lost my sister, Cathi , when she was 5 years old, took in her Mom and Dad when they needed her at 30 and I can't ever remember Mom complaining she had it tough.

The evening Beth was born it was me waiting in the room with the other dads. I remember seeing her after and I vividly remember she looked the most beautiful I had ever seen her look. She lost Dad in April, had Beth in September and yet as she went through those months and she never lost faith and kept on.

Mom and I were always best friends. When Dad left us it was her and me working together. That is how I viewed it...I believed, at 15 years old, that Mom was okay because I was there by her side. As I got older I realized how naive I had been and how much my Mom kept to herself. She managed to keep us all feeling safe, happy and most importantly loved. How difficult and lonely her days must have been without Dad.

When Momma was diagnosed with Alzheimer's her only concern was for us. The doctor tried to console her by saying if she could care for 10 children, then surely her 9 remaining children could care for 1 mom.

Momma last Thanksgiving

Mom taught me about love. Mom taught me to care.

And while I am here let me just say I am forever thankful for Mom and Dad Sikora...they gave me the best.

11 thankful for kids.. I LOVE babies [who would have guessed that?]. Cuddling is a favorite pastime. I can honestly say I never let anything get in the way of holding a baby. I think I had that poem "cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow, because children grow up much to quickly..." framed and hanging all those years just to remind me of what is really important [and fun]. Each age has it's blessing...can't beat hugs and kisses from a toddler, an excited greeting when you walk in their front door. School age...so much to share, so much to admire and encourage. So many books to keep reading. Growing up the oldest of 10 kids, a little mother hen, I continued to find my most joy in kiddos as I grew up. Nieces and nephews, Godkids, foster kids, kids in the hospital, kids at Youth Challenge, Fresh Air Camp kiddos, yep...love em all. Thankful for my kids, grandkiddos and all the kids I have had the honor of loving.

10 Sunshine This has always been a thankful gift. Here in Cleveland we have to rejoice and celebrate these wonderful days even more. When we visited j and h in ABQ they had so many days full of warm sunshine that it was unbelievable. Hmmmm, just thinking....I am thankful for visits to ABQ, too.

9 I am thankful for our health, good, or hoping for good. In our family we have never asked for perfection. If God decides to let medical treatments help, surgeries make dreams come true [like walking up the aisle for a First Communion] or interventions help, I am beyond thrilled. We face life's challenging conditions as a family. Family always rally to help and be supportive. So today I am thankful for healthy lives, years, months or even terrific days for everyone. And thanks to my Mom for teaching me to take one day at a time.

I have seen so many people taking the time to write what they are thankful for a day at a time on facebook. It seems like a great idea. It is so easy to get caught up in all the business of life and the concerns but...

I really have a lot to be thankful for, too.

If I was to do this a day at a time I would be way behind so I'll try and catch up today and then add a day at a time until Thanksgiving.

Been doing a lot to get Shady Moss ready to sell and even more settling into our new home.

Today Katy helped me make Roman shades for the kitchen breakfast nook. We found directions thanks to Pinterest and had lot of fun. We are pretty darn proud of them.

Along with all the happiness of our new home we moved Mom/Grandma to her new nursing home. It was one of our top choices in June but they had no room. Willowood is a small unit right in Brunswick. BT is close by as are Stacy and Beth [less than 5 minutes away]. For me it takes a bit longer but that's okay. So far we are very happy. Mom took no time to adjust...I don't think she noticed a change when Bill and I took her there.

Despite everyone's best care Mom fell and needed 15 staples in her head last week. It was no ones fault. With state laws making restraints a "no no" it was a feared possibility. She is okay but we hate seeing her hurt again. There is no recognition of us anymore...a word or two but more and more her head is slumped and she looks off. We get good moments we treasure, really hold on to.

The day before yesterday I took BT for his Alzheimer evaluation and much as we expected [but feared] Dr. Lerner tested BT in the mild to moderate stages of what he believes is Alzheimer's. With his family history and recent actions no one is surprised, just sad. He is now on Aricept [which helped Momma for a while]. I think his loneliness and sadness over Mom can't be helping him and we are all going to try and keep him feeling supported and loved.

What a year this has been. Happy highs and very sad lows. God has a plan but sometimes it sure gets foggy trying to understand and sometimes we just don't understand but have to hold onto faith. As we packed up Shady Moss I felt we were saying goodbye to one great home with hopeful hearts and a new beginning. We kind of need the fresh excitement as we live life as it is with those we love.

Heather and Jeremy had a little getaway time for their fifth [can it be 5 years already???] anniversary and we gladly jumped at the opportunity to have Annie and Millie to ourselves. We read many books, colored, had cooking help, played on the swings and packed much fun into every minute.

Okay we officially have the keys to our new home. We are anxious to move in. It is a bright, warm, and welcoming house. I am excited and a little sad.

5095 was Mom and BT's before it was ours. Damian took his first steps in the living room [and broke his first tooth on the hearth here, oops]. Grandma Pfeifer lived in the first room down the hall with us here. We shared this home with many, many foster kidddos. Our little Melanie [who was so close to being ours], Jason, Maggie, of course Melissa and so many others we held and loved here.

We hugged and held onto Rachael tightly in our sunroom. We had parties, celebrations, visitors and made memories here. Bill built me a wonderful pond here and for the past 17 years I have loved that so much. My Irish wall is traveling with us.

Of course these photos made it over.

My garden is my treasure here, too. Danny's tree and what is left of Jona's makes me smile. I look in the backyard and can remember the swings full and baseball, football or soccer being played. If I shut my eyes I can almost hear the laughter and noise of happy kids.

Most of our lives as parents has been spent here. I have my special wall marking how each one grew taller. I remember some of the kids standing and stretching till I marked how they had grown. I won't let that memory go.

I remember Grandma Pfeifer encouraging us to adopt Jona so the "little guy would have a home" and us knowing full well this was impossible because at the time foster parents couldn't adopt foster kiddos and then getting the call from Lutheran Children's telling us they went through their list of potential adoptive parents and found no one willing to take a risk on adopting him after he had had his cardiac and respiratory arrest. To this day I think Grandma's prayers helped Jona find his way into our family.

From here we went to Toledo to adopt Jen and brought home our 2nd little girl. Tim came home here after many hospital days. Eddie came to us from Metro the Tuesday before Thanksgiving and filled our home and Thanksgiving with an extra gift of love. And then a very spirited 18 month old ran into our home and hearts, our Evan.

Times change, kids grow up and it is time for Dad and me to stretch our wings. Evan leaves next year for college. Then we will be empty-nesters. Just Dad and me [it hasn't been like that since 1975]. A new beginning...sorta like just marrieds. We want to make a multitude of new memories with our kids, grandkids, family and friends.

So today we toasted [thanks to Damian and Katie gift of champagne] to new beginnings. Our happily ever after continues here...

Chloe made a surprise visit to see Mom this week. Mom is out of the hospital and improving after another patient pushed her down. It has been a rough time for Mom but she is improving. Chloe brightened her day and for a few minutes she kept saying "he is just beautiful" and wanted to hold her. Mom can't really walk steadily anymore. She is extremely shaky, so the wheelchair. I look back on pictures from last fall and miss the Mom I had then.

What a great time we had at Lake Farm Park. It was the kids first time and it didn't disappoint. We had an extra treat of sharing the day with Mary and Mira. The kids were fantastic and we made lots of fun memories...it was one of those days you slow down and just enjoy the moment. I love us.

Having Chloe here is fun. She is growing up so fast. I love seeing how much more she understands, hearing her talk, sing and dance. She is entertaining from the minute she walks in until she hears "Chloe do you want to go home" and happily goes with her Mommy.

Momma taking it slow

The Alzheimer's is slowily taking more and more of Mom away. She doesn't react when I see her most days. Although she has not known me for a long time she at least reacted to having company. Most days she just looks away or ignores me. Even when I rub her back or touch her face I seldom get a reaction. I haven't heard more than a few rambling words in a couple of weeks. When she does speak she sounds agitated or upset, never happy or relaxed any more. She has lost another 10 pounds and is down below 115 pounds. Her eating is infrequent and we just encourage her gently to try food. She still loves ice cream but even that is in much smaller quantities.

Recently we were informed by a state nursing home review board that "Pine Valley isn't meeting Mom's needs". I am still baffled at this. The state has mandated Mom move to a "more severe dementia unit that will engage her more in activities". When the nursing home notified me I was in shock. I petitioned the state. Mom is safe at Pine Valley, the staff cares for her and Mom doesn't interact with any activities these days. But being allowed to stay at Pine Valley is not an option. So we wait for an opening in another home and hope for the best. The new home is closer to BT but also very small with little more than a hallway to wander and we wonder if it will really be any better for Mom.

Like Mom's new one piece sweatsuits? The staff told me about these, I ordered some and she tried them for the first time today. They zip down the back so she stays dressed. Mom didn't seem to mind them and I think she looks pretty in this one.

It's the middle of the night and I am awake. We just did something only a month ago I wouldn't have guessed was ever in our future. I still can't believe that on Thursday afternoon we bought a wonderful new home. If Bill and I had ever had the opportunity to build a home, we couldn't have designed one any better or more beautiful. We stood in the front hall, after seeing the whole place, and said "this is a dream come true" and there is nothing we would change, it is perfect. I simply can't take in the fact that besides our dream it is 100% handicap accessible. Veronika and the kids found it but maybe it was always meant to be ours.

Kids, we can't thank ALL of you enough for your advice, support and encouragement. We are anxious to share a million happy new memories with everyone in our new home. Just wish we could bring some of our Mills Creek neighbors along, but we will not be far away!

Tuesdays and Thursdays with my Mom are going okay. Some days are a little better than others. Her room looks very homey with the little decorations. We have 3 photo boards with pictures. Momma doesn't look at them much but the nurses do and they are now well aware Momma has a huge family loving her and wanting her to be safe and happy. BT, Stacy, Pam and Beth go to see Mom regularly. Tim and Dan have been up and even my brother Tom stopped by yesterday as he was moving to North Carolina.

Today Evan went with me. Grandma was talkative but very agitated and making no sense. I was hoping she'd be calmer but we can never count on anything these days and Evan was aware of all possibilities. It means a lot to have the kids visit, even a short stay. Deep down she is still Grandma.

This picture is pretty bad because the lighting was off but I still like it so much. I think they were on lap 3 when I snapped it.

Don't think I ever mentioned this story but it has me thinking. The day we moved Momma in BT was ready to take her home immediately and was terribly worried when a little lady, named Emily, began talking to us. She told us the story of how she had come to Pine Valley. She decided to enter when things got too difficult for her on her own. She told us wonderful things about the home and reassured us Mom would be okay. BT and I both commented about how much that meant and her words turned out so true despite our early misgivings.

Well, here is the interesting thing...we have never seen her since... not on our many walks, in the dining room, outside, not any where. I asked staff and there were 2 Emilys' but when I went to their rooms they weren't "ours". I don't pretend to understand but maybe Momma had a little angel watching out for her well being that day. She has many kind people at the home helping us now and we are grateful for each of them.

I am sad for Kateri but sooo happy for me...I get Chloe a couple of days a week! She definitely missed her Mommy but had a great first day at Gramma's. I can't believe how much she has matured since last spring. I was with her all summer but caring for her here I can see so well how much she has grown up- a little girl, no baby anymore, and she can certainly let me know what she wants to do.

Eddie heads back to UA tomorrow to begin his second year. Evan starts Monday. I can't believe only one more year of high school and we are done with St. Ed's. After this year we will have no more Back to School Nights, no conferences, Eagle sports or play practices and none the things we have been doing for so long.

College is so different, they are responsible for so much more and we sit on the sideline hoping they do well so they will find a career they enjoy and a job that helps them through life. Eddie has done so well but it isn't because of us. Everything he does now is all him. We are not reminding him of assignments, checking his grades on Edline nor do we know what's going on unless he shares it.

Evan is a SENIOR. He will be off to college next year [our last to go]. It was just yesterday we had 1 to 5 of the kids at St. Pete's, had lined up clothes, books and supplies in the living room for the next morning, made lunches and rushed around to be ready for their bus at 7 am? So many years school has been a big part of our lives and now we are down to the end. It is a relief to know we were able to give the kids the best education possible. To say we have paid the last tuition bill at St. Ed's is a great feeling.

We don't feel like we are empty nesting. With all the grandkiddos we feel our nest is pretty full, but feathered with much less responsibility. Oh sure we will still go to school but after this year we will only go to observe quietly and enjoy it from the eyes of proud grandparents.

Let this school year begin. We are going celebrate Evan's and our last year of school. Go Eagles!

Eddie's 20th birthday

Today is Eddie's 20th birthday. Eddie said he had a great day. He brought in HoHo dessert for his gang at Camp Cheerful, celebrated with us but he even had a more noteworthy thing happen. While the kids were in the pool today Eddie was on the side watching his camper swim just fine. Suddenly he saw another young camper who seemed to be struggling in the water. He jumped in and rescued the camper who was more than a little upset and afraid. This was a day Eddie really made a difference in the life of that camper and deserves to be proud.

We all know Isa is a little bit of a girl with a big personality. Well, our sleepover last night didn't disappoint. She was a little doll. We got ice cream, I gave her a mani and pedi and she entertained us non stop. In the morning she popped in my bed and the day began. She was a real trooper visiting Grandma Thomas, shopping for vacation, taking Aunt Jenny to the M.D. [after the visit she asked Jen so seriously "did you cry?"]. Our treat was lunch at IHop [she asked for pancakes].

Yesterday was yet another difficult day. when we went to speak with medicaid they told us to spend down some of the money my Mom and BT had. What this meant was cashing in the life insurance policy Mom had since 1958. I did that. Next we were advised to make funeral arrangements for Mom and BT with the money. BT and I discussed all the details together and he said he would go to the funeral home and sign the contracts. This proved too difficult for him and he asked if I could possibly go with him. I admit I had hoped to keep working on all the other financial paperwork associated with the nursing home and skip the actual funeral home visit. Yesterday we went together to the home he selected.

I know many people pre-plan their funerals and all I can say is what a gift that is to your family. Talking about Mom and BT like they were gone was heart wrenching. Picking out a urn [BT did the picking, I just said "good"], setting up exactly what they wanted and seeing it all on paper just seemed surreal. Momma and BT are here...why do we have to do this now? Here we were talking about opening up their plot, visitation hours, holy cards, the funeral director is asking me to give him a count on Mom's grandkids and great-grandkiddos, and all the details. I did this with my Momma for my Dad, for Danny and Rachael but I was numb then, since we had just lost them. This was so different, I felt like I was wrong doing it when they were alive. But as hard as it was for me how much more difficult for BT, I can't imagine how hard it was for HIM. All I could do was hug him when we were done and take the paperwork home since this is another of those jobs assigned me, making sure all of his wishes are fulfilled when the time comes.

I went to see Momma afterwards, to hold her head in my lap and brush her hair. I took down the pictures hanging in her room, showed them to her and talked about each of her great-grandkiddos [ there are 15] and reminded her about the exciting news that Krista and Adam and Heather and Jeremy would be giving her 2 more after the new year. I told her I loved her.

What a wonderful visit this has been. We have been spoiled and treated every day. The most important thing is all the time we are having together. Millie is a little sunshine. I am so happy Millie will really know us when we go to NC in a couple of weeks. Our February visit was a long time ago in her young life.

Both girls played so well with us and there were so many little times to remember. What imaginations...you have to love it!

Birthdays...you so look forward to them when you are little. You count the days until YOUR day, anticipate the excitement and are silly with knowledge you will be "bigger".

As years go by you hit milestones 30th, 40th and 50th and they are met with mixed feeling [I can't believe I actually thought 30 was a biggie]. You are older but have so much before you and by the 50th you can't believe you are now as old as you are. People that were 50 when I was in my 20's were old weren't they?

I have to say 60 was my biggie...I did NOT look forward to it. All I felt was sadness for the rushing years gone by. I had GREAT memories but I wanted time to S L O W down. Each year since then has gone by quickly. I thought by now I'd have more time to stop, reflect and plan new dreams but "things to do" still get in the way [I have to work on this one]. Don't get me wrong...I have a good thing going but I want to be young still [and we all know that just isn't happening].

So what to do? Enjoy every moment, treasure the memories and look forward to many more birthdays. In my heart I am a kid [yeah, really] so I don't want to hear anything different. I want to continue to play, enjoy the little things and look forward [while remembering what is behind me]. I want to be needed for who I am. I want to look forward to birthdays as I did as a little girl...full of anticipation. Silly, huh? I know but being a kid is so much fun and I won't grow up [in my heart].

So I am off to begin another year, dream and enjoy every minute of life [and today I get to do it with H, J, Annie and Millie]. I am definitely blessed.

Today I got to relive days gone by. It was an absolute thrill to see Will and Isa graduate to REALLY swimming in the pool. We did the same I did for each of my kiddos...sit on the steps and take off and boy did they do fantastic. It was the a terrific afternoon with all the nearby grandkiddos. You know I wish they had blogging when my kids were young. I would have had a ball writing and sharing pictures. There are so many memories that flood my mind as I read the next generation's blogs. My days were busy, happy and full of all the adventures they get to share in their blogs.

I don't have many things to share about Eddie and Evan, they lost the "little kid cuteness" a while ago, and don't want me sharing too much these days. I could share I just had Evan's senior pictures taken and ordered. Can he be a senior? Can we really be researching colleges? Can we be trying to help him discern a career goal [I will tell you we are not making much progress here]. He is busy with life guarding and the little kids at the pool love him. He is the kind of lifeguard who make things fun and kids around more than blowing his whistle to correct anyone.

Eddie is working with the autistic kids and adults at Camp Cheerful and making the most of it. It is a tough job but a good job. Hey, I can share we just ordered his books for the next semester ["yes" he was thrilled]. He is out more than home this summer.

Have I written an exciting entry...ugh, "no", shared adorble pictures again "no". But this is my day to day life sprinkled in working through so much for BT and many visits with Momma, overseeing a few of the older "kids" are happy, healthy and making progress on their life journeys [it's a mom thing, they are always your "kids"] and my days are full.

I know what I'll do...so I'll post about some fun...the grandkiddos!

This weekend has been busy with Gramma, a fun night seeing Charlie and Joe play and visiting with family. Good people, good food, good times.

And today, on a weather perfect day, Charlotte and John were married. We have know them since Jen began with Dancing Wheels at age 4. They are two of the most giving and kind people I know. After 25 years together they finally got married. The ceremony was absolutely them and filled with love and laughs. Some of you remember them from dance, my special "kid quilt" [Charlotte made me] or from the wheelchair racing they helped Jen get into. Definitely people who see life though optimistic eyes. The ceremony was at their home and really a testament to their strength as they have faced so many physical challenges and a bond of faithfulness. We were so happy to have been there and share the happiness of two special people!

Days since my Mom has been in the nursing home have been kind of hard. It is difficult to make her room homey since things we place there have a way of "walking off" with other patients in the same mental situation as Mom. I am trying hard to make this transition a good one and the best gifts Mom received this week were visits from some of her great-grandkiddos. V, W,I and G visited Tuesday and C and K today. They made her smile like no one else can.

We had such a happy time with the Vincent and Reichard family celebrating Chloe's 1st birthday and Father's Day together. Having Jeremy in town was an extra treat [H, A, Millie we missed you].

Along with all the great times of Fresh Air Camp came the time I dreaded for my Momma. BT and I placed my Mom in a nursing home on Weds. We know this is NOT the solution we had hoped for but with her erratic behavior and desire to get out of the house at any cost and wander we knew we had no chose. Pine Valley is a nice place. It has an open feel and a large area to roam as well as 2 gardens she can get out in on nice days. She will be safe. It is not home and I think I will always feel a sense of remorse that I couldn't take her home and care for her like I did for my Grandma in her last years.

This years camp was sunny and full of fun, hugs and making sure the kids could just be kids and do ANYTHING. Squirt guns were plentiful [I got my share of soakings] and the activities nonstop [from visitors from the zoo to fishing, crafts, cooking, golf cart rides and planting] we played. From 7 to 11 each day it was a non stop day. Best tired you could be! These kids are wonderful. We had a record 40 campers;

I am lucky enough to be heading to Fresh Air Camp today at Camp Cheerful. The optimism and love of these kids brings sunshine to any day. Having fun and caring for a kiddo with a trach/ventilator puts so much in perspective. Hoping Eddie, Tim and I can make the week great for them. We'll see some of you there!

During the week I will also be, hopefully, helping Momma move to Pine Valley and helping her settle in to her new home. She has had enough of the hospital and now Tuesday is the next day we might get her out. Camp is close enough for me to visit her daily while another medical buddy covers for me. Pray the medications calm her agitation, please. Each of you will never know how much your support means to me. Mom deserves to be at peace and to be calm enough to feel all the love we all have for her.
